The server I tested is a Standard VPS NVMe 2 plan running Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with kernel 6.8.0-111-generic, hosted in Bluehost’s Ashburn, Virginia data center.

The instance tested:

• CC-Bluehost-ASH (Ashburn, United States)
• CPU: 1 vCPU, AMD EPYC 9J45 128-Core Processor (single core allocated)
• RAM: 1.9 GiB
• Disk: 48 GB, reported as root filesystem
• OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
• Kernel: 6.8.0-111-generic

One structural note before the numbers is this is a single vCPU plan. Every benchmark below reflects one core doing the work, so the sysbench “multi-thread” run is the same core running the same test a second time, not a second core joining in.

A note on sequencing: I captured baseline resource readings after the full benchmark suite completed rather than before it started. These figures reflect the server settling back toward idle following sustained CPU, memory, and disk load, not an untouched starting state.

• CPU: 90.9% idle, with 9.1% recorded as system time and 0.0% across softirq and steal categories. That’s normal housekeeping overhead settling down after a benchmark run, not a sign of contention with another tenant.
• Memory: 398 MiB used of 1.9 GiB total (about 20%), with 346 MiB in buffer and cache and 1.5 GiB available
• Disk: 2.2 GB of 48 GB used (5%), up from a clean install since fio and sysbench both write temporary test data during a run
• Swap: not configured, confirmed by an empty swapon –show result

No swap on a 1.9 GiB plan means the same caveat applies here as on any small instance: if memory runs out, the Linux OOM killer terminates processes rather than falling back to disk. Claude Code sessions that hold large amounts of file context or run long, memory-heavy operations are the workload most likely to test that ceiling.

1. CPU Performance

I ran sysbench at both single-thread and multi-thread levels using a prime number limit of 20,000 across a 10-second window.

The two runs land within 1.5% of each other, which is exactly what a single-core plan should produce. No scaling to report, just confirmation that the core delivers consistent output from one run to the next.

For Claude Code, that single core carries everything at once: file reads, code analysis, shell command execution, and any concurrent operations all queue through the same thread. There is no second core to absorb a spike while another task is mid-run.

2. Memory Speed

I used sysbench with a 1K block size and a 10 GiB total transfer for both sequential write and read passes.

• Sequential Write: 6,941.14 MiB/sec

• Sequential Read: 7,758.32 MiB/sec

Both passes returned 0.00ms average latency at millisecond precision, meaning memory access completed faster than the measurement tool could register.

Read outpaces write by roughly 12%, a normal, moderate gap. For Claude Code, this matters most when it is reading source files, project context, or large diffs into memory before acting on them: retrieval at this speed is not a bottleneck for that kind of work.

3. Disk I/O

I used fio across three scenarios: sequential write, sequential read, and random 4K mixed read/write, each run for a 30-second window.

Sequential throughput is strong for an entry-tier plan, well beyond what the advertised storage alone would typically sustain over a full 30-second window, pointing to fast underlying host storage with some benefit from caching during the test.

The random 4K result is the more representative figure for everyday Claude Code use, since git operations, file writes during code edits, and session logging are small and random rather than large and sequential. At roughly 49,200 IOPS simultaneously on read and write, this plan handles that kind of activity without either direction waiting on the other.

4. Network Speed

I ran the Ookla speedtest twice to check consistency.

Both tests hit the same server, and the results back each other up closely: download within 60 Mbps across both runs, upload within 2 Mbps, and zero packet loss on both.

That consistency is a stronger signal than either number alone, since a single fast result could be a fluke while two matching results are not.

For Claude Code, this connection carries every API call to Anthropic or another connected model provider, every git push and pull, and any package install during a session. Low, stable latency and zero packet loss translate directly into fewer stalls during an active coding session.

5. Stress Test

I ran stress-ng across all three stressor types for 180 seconds each, with worker counts matched to the plan’s available resources.

Continue to checkout carried every setting into account creation, presented as two stacked sections: Create Account (email and password, or one-click sign-up through Google, Apple, or GitHub) and Billing Information (card, Google Pay, or PayPal, plus standard address fields).

The cart stayed visible on the right through both steps, confirming Standard VPS – NVMe 2, the 24-month term, Claude Code as the selected software, and the hardware spec, along with a free one-month trial of Bluehost’s Professional Email added automatically.

Submitting payment charged the card right away and redirected me straight into Account Manager with no email verification step in the way.

My take: This is the checkout experience working the way it should. 2. Dashboard

After confirming the server was live and correctly labeled, I moved to the question that actually matters: whether Claude Code was genuinely installed rather than just named on the dashboard.

I opened the browser terminal, SSH’d into the server, and ran claude –version.

The command returned “Welcome to Claude Code v2.1.126” along with an ASCII splash graphic, confirming the CLI was installed and ready to invoke, not something I needed to install myself first.

Unlike a tool that drops straight into an active session, Claude Code triggered a first-run setup sequence at this point:

• A prompt to choose a text style for the terminal, with seven options: auto-detect, dark mode, light mode, and colorblind-friendly and ANSI-only variants of each
• A live preview confirming the choice, a syntax-highlighted code diff showing a one-line change to a greet() function, rendered in the selected theme (Monokai Extended, in my case)

This first-run step is a reasonable one-time setup rather than friction that repeats on every session, but it does mean the moment you first connect, you land in a short configuration flow rather than an immediately usable prompt. Once the theme is set, Claude Code is ready to take instructions on the server.

My take: The important question here checked out cleanly. claude –version responded instantly with the correct tool, no install step needed on my end. My first question asked whether the Claude Code VPS supports custom kernel modules or whether Bluehost manages the kernel. The answer walked through a real distinction rather than giving a flat yes or no:

The answer did not soften this:

• Running with root access, it can modify or delete files anywhere on the system if instructed to

It then listed concrete mitigations: running Claude Code under a locked-down, non-root user rather than root directly, keeping it scoped to a specific project directory, adding firewall rules and reverse proxy validation for anything public-facing, reviewing commands before execution in manual approval mode, and using a container or sandbox for untrusted input.

That is a direct, unhedged answer to a real risk question, not a deflection toward generic security advice.

Both responses arrived close together, one timestamped 8:36 AM CT and the second landing seconds after I asked it, consistent with an automated system pulling from the Knowledge Base rather than a queued human reply.

My take: Both answers were specific and technically accurate rather than generic. The kernel question correctly separated what a VPS tier offers from what a Dedicated Server offers, and the root-access follow-up gave a straight, detailed answer about a genuine risk instead of reassurance. The format still reads as a search tool that talks back rather than a live conversation, but the substance earned real credit here.
